Sandra Nearhoof introduced us to Shane Larkin, the Muscogee Country School District Teacher of the Year.  By his own words, he was happy to speak to us as his passion is speaking to students.  He told us of his life as a child and then later in the Army.   What he loved most about serving in the Army was the lessons of giving back and of leadership – tenents still with him.  He talked to the student about the principles and characteristics of good citizenship and also about  learning how to effectively disagree and to  belong without assimilating.  He urged all the students to strive to give back and be involved.  He challenged the students to...

Jennifer Allen introduced us to Scott Ressemeyer.  Scott, vice president of Country’s Barbecue, turned 50 in 2009. In honor of this monumental occasion, he rode all contiguous 48 states on his Harley Davidson motorcycle, along with some close friends. . Because Scott has such a philanthropic heart and had been a supporter of Children’s Miracle Network at The Medical Center for many years, he made his trip into an occasion that would benefit the sick and injured children at The Medical Center. His goal was that donations in support of his 21-day motorcycle journey could purchase a new GE Omni Giraffe Bed for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which cost approximately $35,000. ...

Jennifer Allen introduced us to Dawnell Jacobs today.  Dawn, as her friends call her, is a teacher, author, mother, sister, business owner, public speaker, and just a positive, amazing person.  She is a teacher at the Early College, Academy – actually, she is their Teacher of the Year!  She talked to us today about her journey to where she is now.

Dawn had a rough childhood, but in her own words, instead of recanting her entire youth, she starts her story when she was 17, homeless and a high school dropout, who saw her three brothers get taken away and placed in foster care.  In her senior year of high school when she should be focused on parties and proms and fun things,...

Firefighter of the Year - 02/02/2018
news image

Our February 1st meeting focused on Fire Prevention.  Chief Ricky Shores visited and reminded us this was his 7th year of introducing the Firefighter of the Year.  Before introducing his honoree, he gave us a few helpful reminders.  Most of their fire calls are home fires, and most fires start in the kitchen.  Remain alert!! And it is so important for all of us to plan ahead for two ways to get out of our homes in the event of an emergency.  Take heed to keep pathways and doorways free and clear, and replace that battery in your smoke detector every year.  He was also proud to announce that Columbus has been updated to an ISO Class I rating —which is the best...

Mrs. Myers, principal of Rothschild Leadership Academy, spoke to us on January 25th.  She was born and raised in Columbus, Georgia. She attended pubic schools and graduated from Columbus State University. She hopes to “grow” students like herself who return to the community in which they live and give back to make it a better place to live. Mrs. Myers believes in the motto “I rise; You rise; We Rise.”

She spoke about Luke chapter 5 where Simon Peter had fished all day to no avail but when Jesus told him to cast his net again he caught so many fish he had to call others to help him.

This is the same with Partnerships. It cannot be done alone; you must put...
